The Allure of Color

AllureOfColor3The magic and beauty of colored gemstones is something we love at Wixon Jewelers. For colored gem enthusiasts, deep passionate red rubies, striking green emeralds, and cool blue lagoon tourmalines are only the starting point into a world of captivating color.

Much like an important statement purse, or your favorite pair of red heels, a signature gemstone speaks volumes. It can perfectly express and represent your true self. After all, how many pairs of diamond studs does one need?

It’s hard to pinpoint what draws someone to a particular colored gem, as one selects the piece based on their personal love affair with it. The options, gems and colors are limitless! Begin by investing in one signature piece of color before building the rest of the collection. This piece may be a ring, necklace or earrings. It’s one striking piece that leaves an indelible impression. Depending on eye, hair and skin color, different gems may look better on different individuals. That being said, choose what speaks to you!

Our passion for colored gems has never waned. Dan and Hope are always finding new, exotic gems as well as extraordinary versions of the classics. Come see for yourself the incredible allure of colored gemstones!

One Incredible Piece, Endless Possibilities

Diamond Necklace and BraceletDiamond necklaces have long been a staple of fine jewelry. While a diamond necklace might instantly evoke images of formal gowns and upswept hairdos, the rules for wearing them have gone out the window as women have learned to appreciate the beauty of jewelry on their own terms.

The most creative diamond necklace in our collection can be worn four distinct ways. This beautiful 18k white gold necklace is adorned with 525 round brilliant cut diamonds, totaling 13.92 carats. A true master of metamorphosis, this piece can be broken down into its components, worn together as a set, or on its own.

Be the first to know about tips, tricks and trends in jewelry

Amy Meyer HeadshotAmy shares her pearls of wisdom in her weekly column, Ask Amy. Her impeccable taste helps to select beautiful, current yet timeless looks for our clients in harmony with their own personal style. She believes that jewelry should have a story to tell about the person who wears it and is delighted to commemorate life’s celebrations. If you have a question, just Ask Amy!

Five Ways to Bring New Life to Old Jewelry

Re-Style Jewelry - Bring New Life to Your Old JewelryBringing new life to your jewelry collection is a lot easier than you think. Often times we choose to wear our favorite ring and pendant all the time, leaving some beautiful pieces stuck in a dark jewelry box. That’s no place for an heirloom diamond ring or an old gemstone pendant. Revive those pieces and make them something you show off to everyone.

1. ADD SOME SPARKLE

A special occasion is the perfect time to bring new life to a wedding ring. Create a more meaningful ring by adding two side diamonds to a solitaire setting symbolizing your past, present, and future as a couple. Years ago he picked out your wedding ring, mark that special anniversary by upgrading your diamond or have your existing diamond set in the ring you’ve always wanted!

2. BRIGHTEN IT UP WITH COLOR

Adding color gemstones is another way to make that piece more unique and one you’ll want wear. You can choose a gemstone for its rich bold color or for the belief of what it will bring to the wearer. For centuries, Rubies have represented love and passion while blue Sapphires promise honesty and loyalty. There are so many gemstones to choose from; you’re sure to find the perfect one to bring new meaning to your vintage jewelry.

3. CREATE SOMETHING ENTIRELY NEW

Sometimes that vintage piece is too small or just not your style but that doesn’t mean you have to leave it in the jewelry box. One of the best options is to have a custom piece of jewelry created specifically for you. Take the gemstones from your grandmother’s necklace and have them reset in a pendant that features the birthstones of your family members.

That long strand of pearls you inherited can be converted into multiple bracelets, a layered choker or even an entire suite of earrings, ring, pendant and bracelet. We all have some pieces that we just no longer want but that doesn’t mean you can’t have the diamonds and gemstones reset into individual pieces that you can give to your children or grandchildren as a gift that they will cherish for years.

4. BRING IT BACK TO LIFE

An easy way to enhance your jewelry is to have it professionally cleaned and inspected. We’re happy to do it for you, free of charge. Not only will we clean and buff your pieces, we also thoroughly inspect the gems and settings. Your pieces will look like brand new and your gems and diamonds will have that bright sparkle you’ve missed!

5. TRY NEW STYLES & LOOKS

In some cases you don’t need to do anything to revive your jewelry, you just need to wear them. Now is the time to mix and match metals and also styles, from vintage to modern. By doing this you can create a unique look. Everything from layering necklaces, bracelets or even rings can add contrast to any outfit. Once you start you’ll realize you have a lot of variety and you’ll start to love all your jewelry again. You really can’t go wrong unless you wear ALL of your jewelry at once– after all, we don’t want you to end up looking like Mr. T.

Stack with Style: Fashion Tips for Layering Bracelets & Watches

Jewelry looks this fall are all about stacking and layering. From necklaces to bracelets and even rings, more really is more this season! These styles can seem a bit overwhelming at first (the very thought of wearing multiple rings on every finger makes me feel like a gypsy) but with a little finesse you can enjoy the hot looks of the season in an elegant way. I wrote about how to layer necklaces but my favorite layered look is stacked bracelets. If you don’t wear a watch or bracelets of any kind, start slow and find the look that you love!

How to Stack Bracelets

Select one statement piece (like a great watch) then add a couple of supporting pieces to the mix. Feel free to mix metal colors or even textures for an eclectic look that isn’t overly matched. If you’re feeling bold and want a more dynamic look, add in a layer of color or two with a gemstone bracelet. This is when stacking gets super fun because you can also mix and match your nail color to complete the ensemble. (There’s a lot of planning that goes into this “effortless” look!) As you can tell, there aren’t many rules so pile them on. The key to this look is experimenting and wearing what you like!

Amy’s Look Book

LOOK 1: TOTALLY TEXTURED

This look is all about texture! From the brushed and high polished finish on this Baume & Mercier Linea to the florentine and textured finishes on the bangles, this ensemble is very current yet timeless. Ladies Baume & Mercier Watch with Diamond Bracelets

LOOK 2: RAINBOW GLITZ

I love color! You can’t go wrong with this stunning multi-color sapphire bracelet; it features a rainbow of colors, from bright fuchsia to lime green that will go with whatever you wear! It pairs nicely with the lavender guilloche diamond dial on this Parmigiani Kalpa Piccola. For a little extra glitz, stack on a diamond bangle in rose gold…why not…more is more! Parmigiani Fleurier Ladies Watch with Stacked Bracelets

LOOK 3: BORROWED FROM THE BOYS

This Baume & Mercier Classima in rose gold has that perfect “borrowed from the boys” look. To maintain a feminine touch, I layered dainty bezel diamond bracelets in both white and yellow gold. The bold white gold engraved bangle balances the look giving it a touch of edginess. baume-mercier-watch-with-bracelets Missing a piece or two to achieve the right mix? Question:

“I was looking through my jewelry box the other day and came across some little necklaces that I haven’t worn in years. I’d love to wear them again but they just don’t look quite right on their own. Do you have any ideas for me? They mean too much to me to trade towards something new or change them in any way.”

-Megan M. | Minneapolis, MN

Amy’s Answer:

We all have those pieces in our jewelry box; things we love, or are sentimental to us, but are maybe too small to wear on their own.  My favorite way to wear pieces like this is to layer them.  Layering necklaces can take a bit of practice, but once you master the right proportions it adds instant style to any outfit! Read on for my tips on how to layer necklaces like a pro.

The CHAIN of Command

Note: Whether the look is casual or glamorous, the key is to mix different types of chains in varying lengths for the right effect.

1. SHORT AND SWEET

Start with a necklace around 16” in length that’s sleek and minimalistic like a classic diamond solitaire or chain. This piece should rest right at the collarbone to anchor the entire necklace combo in an effortless and chic way.

2. SHOW SOME FLAIR

Your next piece should be a slightly longer than the choker (between 18-20 inches in length) and show some personality! Whether vintage inspired or modern and funky, this should be a piece that speaks to your unique style.

3. GO LONG

Your third necklace should be the longest piece, around 30 inches or so. This piece can be bold and chunky or sprinkled with diamonds; the key is that it must be the same color as the other two so the look is cohesive.

Choosing Jewelry Based on Skin Tone

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Question:

“I like both platinum and yellow gold jewelry but I’m not sure what looks best on me. Any advice on how I can tell what jewelry I should wear?”

– Melissa R. | Stillwater, MN

Amy’s Answer:

Jewelry is an accessory that’s worn right next to the skin, and often it’s the first thing people notice about your outfit. I always suggest that you should choose a piece based on what you love, but it’s also important to consider how the colors compliment your skin tone. Here is a quick and easy way to find which pieces will suit you the best.

Your skin tone will generally fall into one of two categories, cool or warm.  The best way to determine your own personal skin tone is to look at the color of the veins located on the inside of your arm.

JEWELRY FOR COOL SKIN TONES

Cool skin tones are identifiable by bluish colored veins. People with cooler skin tones may notice pinkish or rosy-red undertones when looking in the mirror. Most people have cool skin, including people with dark skin and tan skin.

Jewelry for Light Skin Tones

If you have determined that you have a cool skin tone, you’ll look best wearing pieces crafted of platinum and white gold. In terms of gems consider pearls, Blue Sapphire, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Ruby, Emerald, Opal, Pariaba Tourmaline, Tanzanite and Zircon.

JEWELRY FOR WARM SKIN TONES

Warm skin tones are identifiable by greenish colored veins. People with warmer skin tones may notice yellow or golden-apricot undertones when looking in the mirror. People with darker skin are not usually warm-skinned.

Jewelry for Warm Skin Tones

Designs crafted in classic yellow gold or rich rose gold look fantastic on those with warm skin tones. Warm hued gemstones such as Alexandrite, Citrine, Garnet, Morganite, Peridot, Ruby, Mandarin Garnet, and fancy yellow diamonds are also a flattering choice.

WHEN IN DOUBT… DIAMONDS

Still not sure about what works best for you? You can’t go wrong with diamonds! They look fantastic on both warm and cool toned skin. What really matters is that you feel comfortable in whatever earrings, necklace, bracelet, or ring you choose regardless of the color of your veins.

Cufflinks: What’s Old is New Again

When it comes to accessories women have an infinite variety to choose from, but men on the other hand have much more limited options. That is why I decided to talk about men’s jewelry – particularly cufflinks. Long thought to be out of fashion or obsolete, cufflinks are now making their way back in the hearts of men looking to create their own unique style.

THE RISE OF CUFFLINKS

Although the first cufflinks appeared in the 1600s, they did not become common until the end of the 18th century where they were worn as a status symbol. In the early 19th century the new employed classes superseded the splendor of the aristocracy. With more businessmen wearing highly conventional wardrobes, a demand for cufflinks was created. By the end of the 19th century they became one of the few acceptable items of jewelry for men.

In the 1970s fashion was dominated by the Woodstock generation and cufflinks disappeared almost completely. But with the return of more traditional values in the 1980s, men’s cufflinks made their way back into fashion and have continued to this day.

CUFFLINKS TODAY

Today, cufflinks are a favorite in men’s jewelry because they allow you to express yourself. Simply wearing cufflinks adds an elegant and stylish statement to a man’s attire while also reflecting his unique personality. Today’s cufflinks feature new innovative designs that are eye catching, yet still very classic. Bold shapes, different metal combinations, diamonds and gemstones, along with classic and contemporary designs are transcending cufflinks in today’s fashion world. Even Swiss watch brands, like Patek Philippe, have released cufflinks that are designed to accent your timepiece.

ACCESSORIZE WHEN APPROPRIATE

Some men think that cufflinks are too formal. In the world of fashion you need to accessorize when appropriate. There isn’t really a right or wrong answer for this however there are a couple guidelines to keep you looking sharp. Just like you shouldn’t wear a t-shirt to a wedding, be sure to choose cufflinks that are appropriate for the occasion. I always suggest, “when in doubt, overdress.” Having a variety of cufflink styles that range from casual to formal will also allow you to easily pair them with the right clothing and event.

TIPS & TRICKS

If after reading this, you decide you “need” a pair of cufflinks, here are some quick tips on how to wear them. They are to be worn on a shirt with French cuffs – extra long cuffs with holes on each side of the cuff, but no buttons. These may be either single or double-length (“French”) cuffs, and may be worn either “kissing,” with the ends pinched together, or “barrel-style,” with one end overlapping the other. Both are acceptable however, “kissing” cuffs are usually preferred.

Ear Candy: How To Choose Your Next Pair of Earrings

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Do you have a question about diamonds, gemstones or jewelry? Submit your question here and you may be featured in Amy’s weekly column!

Question:

“I am looking to treat myself to my first pair of nice earrings and can’t decide what style I should choose. Can you offer any advice on trends in earrings and what earrings I should have in my jewelry box?”

-Lisa R. | Eau Claire, WI

Amy’s Answer:

Great question, Lisa!  I love earrings– they are one of the most essential parts of any jewelry wardrobe. Many women wouldn’t dream of leaving the house, much less going to a party or other social gathering without them. Just as they do in clothing, jewelry trends can quickly come and go, but certain styles seem to have endless staying power. Here are a few gorgeous earring styles that are sure to have your ears dressed in the loveliest of fashion for seasons to come.

DIAMOND OR GEMSTONE STUDS

Stud earrings are classic, simple and chic and they are my go-to earring of choice. They fit snug to the ear and beautifully showcase a diamond or gemstone with ease and elegance. Every woman should own a great pair of studs. Whether you prefer diamonds or color gemstones, this is the “little black dress” of earrings!

Here are a few of my favorites…

DIAMOND HOOPS

Diamond hoops are a polished way to accessorize any outfit. With a variety of sizes and shapes, you are sure to find the perfect pair to flatter your personality and face shape.  My personal favorites are inside/outside diamond hoops.  I recommend going one size larger than you normally would…they tend to shrink over time.

Diamond Hoop Earrings

ADD A BURST OF COLOR

Take a gander at your closet; what color do you see the most? (For me, its black or pink.) Select a pair of earrings that are predominantly the color that appears most in your closet. You can choose whatever style you like best! I also like to pair complimentary colors together (think opposite sides of the color wheel). I love the bright pop of mint green when I’m wearing pink! This trick works wonders for eye colors too.

Here are a few of my favorites…

YOUR PARTY PARTNER

Even if you don’t dress up often, every woman should have a pair of what I call “Party Earrings”, an essential piece of jewelry for special events. Whether chunky or dainty, this is an earring (usually of the dangly variety) that makes you feel great and is sure to turn a few heads.

Here are a few of my favorites…

TRY THEM OUT

I invite you to stop by and explore these styles in person. I firmly believe that you must try on earrings to get a feel for what speaks to you and your individual style.
