Rule Breaker, Dream Maker

RuleBreakerRules are made to be broken, aren’t they? Chances are your mother wore her same simply lovely band for decades without giving a new piece a second thought. The sentiment behind the jewel hasn’t changed but our options certainly have evolved.

Upgrading an original center diamond, wearing an engagement ring without a wedding band, or even choosing a larger diamond to be worn on the right hand instead of the left are all new outlooks for today’s women that were once considered “against the rules.” Other exciting options include fancy shapes and colors, or perhaps forgoing a traditional ring and wearing an eternity band that costs more than a two-carat diamond. Monumental anniversaries, milestone life moments, new love or simply a wish for a fresh design to celebrate a new chapter in life—jewelry commemorates all of those occasions and then some. Whether it’s redesigning a beloved original or choosing the piece you’ve always dreamed of wearing, it’s okay to break the rules and let a little new sparkle celebrate the sentiment!

Break the Rules:

LARGER DIAMONDS ON THE RIGHT HAND: After years together, changing an original engagement ring can be impossible to imagine. Choose to celebrate long-term love with a larger diamond on the right hand instead!

Fancy That

A darling for decades, the round diamond will always be considered a classic. Its scintillating sparkle has made it a perfect choice for diamond wearers for centuries. One can always circle back around to this timeless shape, but there are now more glittering possibilities to explore for rings, necklaces and earrings than ever before.

Fancy shapes are becoming appealing to many, and are casting a new sparkle on diamond lovers worldwide. Considered to be any shape other than round, their allure and excitement are becoming irresistible. Each shape has its own distinct look, sparkle and identity, while providing its own twist on a diamond’s most loved feature, its dazzle. Skilled diamond cutters are showcasing their talents and transforming diamond crystals into a variety of diamond shapes that are quite simply, stunning!

Popular Shapes

With so many choices available, it can be challenging to choose just one! These popular shapes are vastly different and, as such, appeal to individuals for different reasons.

diamond-shapes_OvalOVAL CUT diamonds have the classic appearance of a round diamond with a modern twist! It is a popular cut in all types of gems, but especially in diamond engagement rings. Its sparkle is similar to the round brilliant cut but its shape showcases its size in a much larger way, making it easy to love this elegantly feminine shape.

diamond-shapes_EmeraldEMERALD CUT diamonds have a unique optical appearance because of the rectangular facets step-cut into the pavilion. This cut beautifully showcases the diamond’s clarity as its large rectangular table make inclusions and color more apparent. An emerald cut diamond has a classically timeless appeal and provides a subtly stunning alternative look to the round.

diamond-shapes_CushionSometimes called a pillow-cut diamond, the CUSHION CUT has earned its name for its pillow shape. Cushion cut diamonds tend to have impeccable brilliance, which can be attributed to their rounded corners and larger facets. These diamonds are available in square and rectangular shapes.

A properly cut PEAR SHAPE diamond is a rare and special find. With its unique asymmetrical shape they are a challenge for diamond cutters to perfect. Every other diamond shape is a basic symmetrical geometric shape. The pear on the other hand, is a hybrid between a dazzling round and the elongated, full marquise cut. The end result, a tear-drop shape that is distinctively feminine with a stunning and elegant design.

The square shape has two popular cuts, the PRINCESS CUT and the RADIANT CUT. The princess cut was introduced in the 1960s, and has been gaining popularity ever since. It tends to be favored by women looking for a traditional shape with a modern twist. In comparison, the radiant is a fusion of a cushion cut and a princess cut. It has a square shape, like a princess cut, but with beveled corners. Its vibrant and lively appearance produces a sparkle similar to the stunning cushion cut. It can also be found in the elongated shape of the emerald cut, but with a much brighter brilliance.

Buying a Fancy

When diamond graders evaluate fancy cuts, they look for the same characteristics as rounds, such as color and clarity. Round diamonds are assigned specific cut grades based on their proportion, symmetry and polish. With rounds, specific details are incredibly important. With fancy shapes, it helps to think “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” However, small nuances to a diamond’s pattern can create big differences to the end result. Cushion shaped diamonds, for example, can display a wide variety of different faceting patterns. Some patterns display a pattern featuring larger facets and a softer sparkle, where others might have a tighter pattern with bigger brilliance. The general shape in addition to the sparkle and pattern, are the ultimate decision maker in the beauty and appeal of fancy shaped diamonds. Let our experts introduce you to the wide spectrum of diamond shapes and help you find one you just might fancy for yourself!

The Look of Love

LookOfLove2

Love today is prominently celebrated in many different ways and it’s only fitting that jewelry is a reflection of our modern outlook. Brides are embracing new ring styles in a variety of different colors, shapes and sizes. While brides still want their pieces to maintain a timeless appeal, they also desire a stylish reflection of the current times. From warm metals to yellow diamonds, the trends below strike the delicate balance between timeless design and contemporary flair.

A Warm Welcome

One trend that can’t be missed is the resurgence of warm tone metals. Rose gold and yellow gold are back in a big way! Designers are creating more styles and options using these warm hued metals than they have in years. Rose gold is a soft, romantic and an ultra-feminine choice that is capturing the hearts of many. Yellow gold, a global staple for decades, is entering into the limelight all over again. Adored by traditionalists for years, it is now a popular choice for women of all ages.

Back to the Basics

Interestingly enough, after years of heavy embellishments, simple solitaires are again a popular trend for the modern bride. The solitaire setting allows the center diamond to take the stage and truly showcase its beauty. Many solitaires aren’t just a plain band, modern solitaires settings are often showcased with a twist. Diamonds on the prongs, artisan finishes to the metal, and braided or twisted bands are just a few of the new ways this classic style has been reinvented.

The Color of Canary

Yellow diamonds are enjoying their moment in the sun in a big way. Their bright yellow hue is spreading like wildfire, and creating a buzz worthy of their beauty. The shade of yellow will vary depending on the diamond—the stronger and richer the color, the more rare and valuable the diamond becomes. Women are feeling the pull of this sunny stunner, as its golden hue combined with its glamorous sparkle create an irresistible combination for women of all ages.

A New Hue

Classic bright white diamonds never go out of style but today’s wedding trends are displaying a rainbow of new hues! Gorgeous sapphire rings are taking the lead as an alternative gem to the traditional diamond. The rich, royal blue color of the finest quality sapphires easily rival diamonds in beauty. Unlike some alternative gemstones, sapphire is one of the most resilient colored gems available. This makes it the perfect alternative that’s durable enough for a lifetime of everyday wear.

Layer Upon Layer

The more the merrier has never been more apparent in jewelry then as of late. Flip open any high-fashion or lifestyle magazine and the trend of stacking is showcased in almost every jewelry category. Bands, bracelets and necklaces are being worn in sets of two, three or even four. Women are choosing stacking bands for their left or right hand that feature mixed metals, shapes and styles. Stacking bands are also being used as a substitute for the traditional engagement ring. One way to add extra oomph and importance to a stack is choosing a larger diamond band as the centerpiece. Eternity bands in larger sizes featuring fancy shapes or colored diamonds are only the beginning of building a special stack!

Hello Yellow

The yellow diamond craze is increasing at a frantic rate. Never before have jewelry lovers been so fascinated by fancy colored diamonds. The focus on celebrity culture and the exposure associated with it is credited for bringing yellow diamonds to the forefront. These colored beauties are striking chords with women of all ages and style preferences. Yellow diamonds are not just a passing trend, but a new cornerstone in the dazzling world of gems.

Naturally Unique

One of the most intriguing features about yellow diamonds is that no two look alike. Each diamond has its own unique beauty and distinct hue. Natural fancy yellow diamonds come in a variety of shapes, sizes, shades and colors. While the rich and pure shades are the most coveted, softer and lighter have their own subtle allure.181713-1The most important thing when buying yellow diamonds is the actual color. The stronger the color, the more valuable they become. Diamonds graded Intense and Vivid command top dollar. There are many color names associated with yellow diamonds, and the grading terms referenced for them are different than for traditional white diamond. The four most commonly referred terms are Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid. The visual difference between Fancy Light yellow and Fancy Vivid yellow can be an extraordinary range in color. When searching for the finest yellow diamonds, seek to find pure yellow without any modifying colors. The most gorgeous yellow diamonds have a certain sizzle thanks to their extraordinary color that just cannot be replicated with white diamonds.

A Cut Above the Rest

Yellow diamonds are cut to maximize color, where white diamonds are cut for brilliance. It’s quite rare to find a yellow diamond cut in the round shape, as that shape can lessen the overall color. The most popular yellow diamond shapes are cushion and radiant. Equally important is how well cut that particular shape is. Yellow diamonds that are exceptionally well cut skillfully display their color, where poorly cut diamonds miss the mark visually.

Fancy Colored Engagement RingsThey are also becoming a gorgeous alternative option to the classic and traditional white diamond engagement ring. More brides are exploring new ring options than ever before. There is no gem more resilient to wear than a diamond. For those who crave a pop of color, this unique beauty is the perfect substitute for the traditional choice. Its bright and lively color is expressive and unique. It’s also a premium option for a right-hand ring, not to mention necklaces, bracelets or earrings. Experience first-hand the magnetism of this yellow stunner!

How to Size Your Engagement & Wedding Rings

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Question:

“I’m not sure my rings are the perfect fit.  They are a little loose, but I don’t like the way rings look on my hand when they are too tight.  What should I do?”

– Laura D. | Milwaukee, WI

Amy’s Answer:

That’s a great question, Laura! When it comes to jewelry and rings (among other things) there’s no such thing as a perfect fit. For many women, a good fit means comfortable most of the time. There are days when my rings are too tight, and days when they’re a little loose. So how do you know when you have a good fit? A good rule of thumb is that when a ring fits properly it should slide on easily, but resist when coming off. If your jewelry isn’t fitting correctly, resizing your ring may be necessary. Here are a few tips for a good fitting:

WORK WITH AN EXPERIENCED JEWELER

First and foremost, this is not a “do-it-yourself” project… you will want to have your ring sized by a professional. An experienced professional will be able to recommend a size based on your finger shape and style of your ring.

THE WIDER THE RING, THE LARGER THE SIZE

When resizing we use sizing rings, which are a set of example rings in various sizes and widths to help determine the size of your finger. To ensure a proper fit, the sizing rings should closely match the width of the ring being fitted. Narrow rings will typically require a smaller size than wide rings since they take up less space on the finger. Ring Sizing Tool

THE IMPACT OF FINGER SHAPE

Finger shape also plays a large role in determining the right fit of a ring. Some fingers are largest at the base and gradually taper without a prominent knuckle. On this type of finger, the ring should fit snugly at the base of the finger without causing bulges or a permanent indent. You should be able to push the ring up from the underneath side of your finger, and see a small space between the ring and the top of the finger, this gives your finger some breathing room.

RING SIZING WITH LARGE KNUCKLES

Sizing fingers that are largest at the knuckle can be a bit trickier. The key here is to size the ring so it fits comfortably over the knuckle without being too large for the base of the finger. If there is a large size difference between the knuckle and base of the finger, the ring tends to spin and turn on the hand– especially in engagement rings which tend to be top heavy. A simple fix for this is to add sizing beads to the inside of the ring. They prevent some of the spinning while still maintaining a comfortable fit over the knuckle.

Sizing Beads in Engagement & Wedding Rings

SIZE YOUR RING FOR COMFORT

Proper sizing is more of a personal preference than a perfect science. Different activities throughout the day and temperature variations cause the size our hands and fingers to constantly change, so it’s normal to have a ring feel tight sometimes and loose other times– often in the same day! But if you are in danger of losing your ring or it’s impossible to remove because it’s so tight, stop in and have our in-house jewelers size your ring… you’ll be glad you did!

Question:

“My husband and I will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary this year and I would like to celebrate by redesigning my ring. Ten years ago I played it safe and selected a ring just like everyone else’s and now I am ready for something different! I’ve been seeing a lot of rose gold in fashion magazines, but I am unsure if this is the right move for me. What do you think?”

-Rebecca L. | Eagan, MN

Amy’s Answer:

Congratulations on your anniversary, Rebecca! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate ten years than with a new ring! Personally, I am head-over-heels in love with rose gold! It looks fantastic with diamonds, gorgeous with color gemstones and so elegant on a great timepiece.

Historically, this gold was dubbed “Russian Gold” after it originated in Russia during the 19th century. It became accepted all over the world in the 1920s and has recently witnessed an impressive comeback since its heyday during the retro period of the 30s and 40s.

Rose Gold Engagement Rings by A. Jaffe

I think that rose gold could be an incredible option for you! Here are five reasons to consider rose gold…

1. IT’S HERE TO STAY

Don’t worry about this look quickly becoming passé. For the foreseeable future, I predict a rosy outlook for this pleasantly pink precious metal.

2. PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS

The pink hue of rose gold works beautifully with all skin types, bringing out the blush tones of the skin. Rose gold adds warmth and marries well with color gemstones, especially the pink Spinel in this Wixon Custom pendant.

3. INCREDIBLE VERSATILITY

Rose gold is so versatile; you don’t have to worry about changing over your entire jewelry wardrobe to match a new rose gold ring. In fact, the subtle tones of rose are ideal for mixing and matching and pair so well with other platinum and yellow gold pieces you currently own.

4. PERFECT FOR PAVE

I love rose gold pave! The great thing is that it doesn’t have that “bling” effect that we see sometimes with platinum or yellow gold pave pieces.

5. STYLISH & TRENDY

Its understated elegance matches so nicely with the feminine styles and trends that we’re seeing today.

Behind the Cushion Cut Diamond

The most popular choice for a diamond shape is without a doubt the round brilliant cut diamond.  Timeless and classic, this shape is known for having a bright and blinding sparkle that has been loved by many for generations.  That being said, there are so many amazing fancy shape diamonds to choose from as well!  The most well-know shapes being pear, oval, princess, radiant, marquise, cushion, emerald and asscher cut.  Each shape has its own personality and distinct look.  Different personality types, in general, tend to be drawn towards specific shapes.

There is a history and story behind each shape, and I look forward to eventually sharing with you what makes each shape so special!  Today, we’re going to explore the beauty of the cushion cut diamond.

cushion-cut-diamond-shape

Cushion Cut Diamonds

For many, the cushion cut may seem like a new and unfamiliar shape compared to the classic fancies that are the most well-known.  However, the cushion cut has actually been around for well over 100 years.

BEHIND THE CUSHION

This shape is also known as the ‘pillow-cut’ or ‘candlelight diamond’ for its soft and rounded corners and larger facets.   The proportions on this can vary from rectangular to square, and they can also feature different faceting patterns.  This will give each cushion cut its own unique and original look and pattern.  There are rough recommendations for length to width ratios, but truly the beauty of each gem and each shape is in the eye of the beholder.

FAME & FORTUNE

The cushion cut is currently one of the most popular fancy shapes.  Many modern celebrities such as Jennifer Garner, Molly Sims, Giuliana Rancic and Ivanka Trump wear this shape.  Additionally, many of the world’s most famous diamonds are cushion-cuts.  These include the Hope Diamond (45.52 carat) the Regent Diamond (140.50 carat) and the yellow Tiffany Diamond (128.54 carat).

A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Even though they currently experience a significant amount of attention, cushion cuts are still considered to be quite uncommon in many jewelry stores.  Many of the fancy shapes that are most well-known have been loved by generations, but it wasn’t until recent years that the cushion cut started experiencing its revival.  It is a shape that brings back an era of elegance and romance, and one that I encourage everyone looking for a new diamond to consider!

How To Select a Men’s Wedding Band

Platinum Men's Wedding Rings

Precious metals make priceless memories

Finding the perfect wedding band for a groom-to-be can be a complicated decision. There are such a wide variety of metal options available today, and many of them are quite different then those for ladies. The assortment of alternative metals is wide and varied. Tungsten, titanium, stainless steel, and cobalt are just a few of the unconventional choices out there.

As interesting and trendy as a lot of these styles are, I believe there isn’t any metal more classic or irresistible then the enduring metal choice of gold or platinum. Tried and true, these two options are made to last lifetimes and then some. A wedding is one of life’s most sentimental and memorable moments. All of that emotion is often captured and symbolized by the wedding ring.

As life grows and changes, so do our fingers

While most alternative metals can never be adjusted, platinum or gold (which includes yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold) is made to withstand years of growth and change as well. When completed by a master goldsmith, platinum and gold can be altered to have your wedding ring sized to accomodate for growing or shrinking finger sizes.

Make your ring a treasured heirloom

The heirloom appeal of a precious metal is often not fully appreciated until major milestone anniversaries have come and gone. I’ve seen countless clients bring in their father’s and grandfather’s wedding bands crafted in platinum or gold to have adjusted for their own wedding. The opportunity to use a family piece that is such a lasting commitment and symbol of love is truly a testimony to the life-long quality of a precious metal.

Invest in quality for a lifetime

Wedding planning is filled with never-ending list of wedding expenses, which of course also includes the wedding band. The investment in a precious metal can be one more budget challenge to face. However, when marriage is made to last a lifetime, it’s a wonderful thing to have a band that is made to do the same!
