Stack with Style: Fashion Tips for Layering Bracelets & Watches

Jewelry looks this fall are all about stacking and layering. From necklaces to bracelets and even rings, more really is more this season! These styles can seem a bit overwhelming at first (the very thought of wearing multiple rings on every finger makes me feel like a gypsy) but with a little finesse you can enjoy the hot looks of the season in an elegant way. I wrote about how to layer necklaces but my favorite layered look is stacked bracelets. If you don’t wear a watch or bracelets of any kind, start slow and find the look that you love!

How to Stack Bracelets

Select one statement piece (like a great watch) then add a couple of supporting pieces to the mix. Feel free to mix metal colors or even textures for an eclectic look that isn’t overly matched. If you’re feeling bold and want a more dynamic look, add in a layer of color or two with a gemstone bracelet. This is when stacking gets super fun because you can also mix and match your nail color to complete the ensemble. (There’s a lot of planning that goes into this “effortless” look!) As you can tell, there aren’t many rules so pile them on. The key to this look is experimenting and wearing what you like!

Amy’s Look Book

LOOK 1: TOTALLY TEXTURED

This look is all about texture! From the brushed and high polished finish on this Baume & Mercier Linea to the florentine and textured finishes on the bangles, this ensemble is very current yet timeless. Ladies Baume & Mercier Watch with Diamond Bracelets

LOOK 2: RAINBOW GLITZ

I love color! You can’t go wrong with this stunning multi-color sapphire bracelet; it features a rainbow of colors, from bright fuchsia to lime green that will go with whatever you wear! It pairs nicely with the lavender guilloche diamond dial on this Parmigiani Kalpa Piccola. For a little extra glitz, stack on a diamond bangle in rose gold…why not…more is more! Parmigiani Fleurier Ladies Watch with Stacked Bracelets

LOOK 3: BORROWED FROM THE BOYS

This Baume & Mercier Classima in rose gold has that perfect “borrowed from the boys” look. To maintain a feminine touch, I layered dainty bezel diamond bracelets in both white and yellow gold. The bold white gold engraved bangle balances the look giving it a touch of edginess. baume-mercier-watch-with-bracelets Missing a piece or two to achieve the right mix? The Chain of Command: How to Layer Necklaces

Do you have a question about diamonds, gemstones or jewelry? Submit your question here and you may be featured in Amy’s weekly column!

Question:

“I was looking through my jewelry box the other day and came across some little necklaces that I haven’t worn in years. I’d love to wear them again but they just don’t look quite right on their own. Do you have any ideas for me? They mean too much to me to trade towards something new or change them in any way.”

-Megan M. | Minneapolis, MN

Amy’s Answer:

We all have those pieces in our jewelry box; things we love, or are sentimental to us, but are maybe too small to wear on their own.  My favorite way to wear pieces like this is to layer them.  Layering necklaces can take a bit of practice, but once you master the right proportions it adds instant style to any outfit! Read on for my tips on how to layer necklaces like a pro.

The CHAIN of Command

Note: Whether the look is casual or glamorous, the key is to mix different types of chains in varying lengths for the right effect.

1. SHORT AND SWEET

Start with a necklace around 16” in length that’s sleek and minimalistic like a classic diamond solitaire or chain. This piece should rest right at the collarbone to anchor the entire necklace combo in an effortless and chic way.

2. SHOW SOME FLAIR

Your next piece should be a slightly longer than the choker (between 18-20 inches in length) and show some personality! Whether vintage inspired or modern and funky, this should be a piece that speaks to your unique style.

3. GO LONG

Your third necklace should be the longest piece, around 30 inches or so. This piece can be bold and chunky or sprinkled with diamonds; the key is that it must be the same color as the other two so the look is cohesive.

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Question:

“I’ve always loved the look of three stone rings, but I am unsure if I want one with round diamonds or something different. It seems that round diamonds are the most popular but I would like something that’s a little out of the ordinary. What options do I have? Any ideas for me?”

-Linda S. | Cottage Grove, MN

Amy’s Answer:

Thanks for the question, Linda. Three stone rings are a classic choice for celebrating an engagement, anniversary or any special occasion. More than just three beautiful gems on a band, each gemstone symbolizes your past, present and future as a couple. They essentially state, “I have loved you, I love you now and I will always love you.”

We offer a variety of three stone engagement ring styles, ranging from classic to contemporary, with many options in between. Here are a few of my favorites!

How to Size Your Engagement & Wedding Rings

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Question:

“I’m not sure my rings are the perfect fit.  They are a little loose, but I don’t like the way rings look on my hand when they are too tight.  What should I do?”

– Laura D. | Milwaukee, WI

Amy’s Answer:

That’s a great question, Laura! When it comes to jewelry and rings (among other things) there’s no such thing as a perfect fit. For many women, a good fit means comfortable most of the time. There are days when my rings are too tight, and days when they’re a little loose. So how do you know when you have a good fit? A good rule of thumb is that when a ring fits properly it should slide on easily, but resist when coming off. If your jewelry isn’t fitting correctly, resizing your ring may be necessary. Here are a few tips for a good fitting:

WORK WITH AN EXPERIENCED JEWELER

First and foremost, this is not a “do-it-yourself” project… you will want to have your ring sized by a professional. An experienced professional will be able to recommend a size based on your finger shape and style of your ring.

THE WIDER THE RING, THE LARGER THE SIZE

When resizing we use sizing rings, which are a set of example rings in various sizes and widths to help determine the size of your finger. To ensure a proper fit, the sizing rings should closely match the width of the ring being fitted. Narrow rings will typically require a smaller size than wide rings since they take up less space on the finger. Ring Sizing Tool

THE IMPACT OF FINGER SHAPE

Finger shape also plays a large role in determining the right fit of a ring. Some fingers are largest at the base and gradually taper without a prominent knuckle. On this type of finger, the ring should fit snugly at the base of the finger without causing bulges or a permanent indent. You should be able to push the ring up from the underneath side of your finger, and see a small space between the ring and the top of the finger, this gives your finger some breathing room.

RING SIZING WITH LARGE KNUCKLES

Sizing fingers that are largest at the knuckle can be a bit trickier. The key here is to size the ring so it fits comfortably over the knuckle without being too large for the base of the finger. If there is a large size difference between the knuckle and base of the finger, the ring tends to spin and turn on the hand– especially in engagement rings which tend to be top heavy. A simple fix for this is to add sizing beads to the inside of the ring. They prevent some of the spinning while still maintaining a comfortable fit over the knuckle.

Sizing Beads in Engagement & Wedding Rings

SIZE YOUR RING FOR COMFORT

Proper sizing is more of a personal preference than a perfect science. Different activities throughout the day and temperature variations cause the size our hands and fingers to constantly change, so it’s normal to have a ring feel tight sometimes and loose other times– often in the same day! But if you are in danger of losing your ring or it’s impossible to remove because it’s so tight, stop in and have our in-house jewelers size your ring… you’ll be glad you did!

Choosing Jewelry Based on Skin Tone

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Question:

“I like both platinum and yellow gold jewelry but I’m not sure what looks best on me. Any advice on how I can tell what jewelry I should wear?”

– Melissa R. | Stillwater, MN

Amy’s Answer:

Jewelry is an accessory that’s worn right next to the skin, and often it’s the first thing people notice about your outfit. I always suggest that you should choose a piece based on what you love, but it’s also important to consider how the colors compliment your skin tone. Here is a quick and easy way to find which pieces will suit you the best.

Your skin tone will generally fall into one of two categories, cool or warm.  The best way to determine your own personal skin tone is to look at the color of the veins located on the inside of your arm.

JEWELRY FOR COOL SKIN TONES

Cool skin tones are identifiable by bluish colored veins. People with cooler skin tones may notice pinkish or rosy-red undertones when looking in the mirror. Most people have cool skin, including people with dark skin and tan skin.

Jewelry for Light Skin Tones

If you have determined that you have a cool skin tone, you’ll look best wearing pieces crafted of platinum and white gold. In terms of gems consider pearls, Blue Sapphire, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Ruby, Emerald, Opal, Pariaba Tourmaline, Tanzanite and Zircon.

JEWELRY FOR WARM SKIN TONES

Warm skin tones are identifiable by greenish colored veins. People with warmer skin tones may notice yellow or golden-apricot undertones when looking in the mirror. People with darker skin are not usually warm-skinned.

Jewelry for Warm Skin Tones

Designs crafted in classic yellow gold or rich rose gold look fantastic on those with warm skin tones. Warm hued gemstones such as Alexandrite, Citrine, Garnet, Morganite, Peridot, Ruby, Mandarin Garnet, and fancy yellow diamonds are also a flattering choice.

WHEN IN DOUBT… DIAMONDS

Still not sure about what works best for you? You can’t go wrong with diamonds! They look fantastic on both warm and cool toned skin. What really matters is that you feel comfortable in whatever earrings, necklace, bracelet, or ring you choose regardless of the color of your veins.

Ear Candy: How To Choose Your Next Pair of Earrings

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Do you have a question about diamonds, gemstones or jewelry? Submit your question here and you may be featured in Amy’s weekly column!

Question:

“I am looking to treat myself to my first pair of nice earrings and can’t decide what style I should choose. Can you offer any advice on trends in earrings and what earrings I should have in my jewelry box?”

-Lisa R. | Eau Claire, WI

Amy’s Answer:

Great question, Lisa!  I love earrings– they are one of the most essential parts of any jewelry wardrobe. Many women wouldn’t dream of leaving the house, much less going to a party or other social gathering without them. Just as they do in clothing, jewelry trends can quickly come and go, but certain styles seem to have endless staying power. Here are a few gorgeous earring styles that are sure to have your ears dressed in the loveliest of fashion for seasons to come.

DIAMOND OR GEMSTONE STUDS

Stud earrings are classic, simple and chic and they are my go-to earring of choice. They fit snug to the ear and beautifully showcase a diamond or gemstone with ease and elegance. Every woman should own a great pair of studs. Whether you prefer diamonds or color gemstones, this is the “little black dress” of earrings!

Here are a few of my favorites…

DIAMOND HOOPS

Diamond hoops are a polished way to accessorize any outfit. With a variety of sizes and shapes, you are sure to find the perfect pair to flatter your personality and face shape.  My personal favorites are inside/outside diamond hoops.  I recommend going one size larger than you normally would…they tend to shrink over time.

Diamond Hoop Earrings

ADD A BURST OF COLOR

Take a gander at your closet; what color do you see the most? (For me, its black or pink.) Select a pair of earrings that are predominantly the color that appears most in your closet. You can choose whatever style you like best! I also like to pair complimentary colors together (think opposite sides of the color wheel). I love the bright pop of mint green when I’m wearing pink! This trick works wonders for eye colors too.

Here are a few of my favorites…

YOUR PARTY PARTNER

Even if you don’t dress up often, every woman should have a pair of what I call “Party Earrings”, an essential piece of jewelry for special events. Whether chunky or dainty, this is an earring (usually of the dangly variety) that makes you feel great and is sure to turn a few heads.

Here are a few of my favorites…

TRY THEM OUT

I invite you to stop by and explore these styles in person. I firmly believe that you must try on earrings to get a feel for what speaks to you and your individual style.

Question:

“I need a few ideas for my wife for Mother’s Day. The kids usually make something at school and we typically go out for brunch, but I think I really need to step it up this year, any advice?”

-Jim O. | Mendota Heights, MN

Amy’s Answer:

Jim, I bet you can recall the very day she became a mother, the look in her eyes, the smile on her face. Motherhood is often a thankless job with long nights, early mornings and little time for herself. I’m sure the tradition of brunch and craft project picture frames is one that she enjoys. If you want to do something truly memorable this year you can’t go wrong with a gift of fine jewelry. This one of a kind gift is one that she will cherish for a lifetime and shows her how much she means to your family. Here are a few ideas that are certainly “mother approved”.

PEARLS

No longer just your grandmother’s gem of choice, pearls are losing their stuffy reputation and holding their own as the hot look this spring.  From timeless full strands to edgy cuff bracelets, pearls are equal parts sophistication and modern.

White South Sea Pearl Necklace

DIAMOND HOOPS

Along with most others, I love diamond hoops! We offer a variety of hoops styles and sizes to fit anyone’s individual style. Larger hoops are perfect for a bolder, more fashion forward look, while smaller hoops are fitting for a more understated effect. No matter the size and style, diamond hoops offer a versatility that she will enjoy. Easily worn casually or dressed up for any occasion, these earrings will never go out of style and are sure to be a favorite for years to come.

Diamond Hoop Earrings

GORGEOUS GEMS

I think the key to a good gift is to select a piece that the recipient would enjoy, but wouldn’t necessarily treat themselves to. For me, that means big, bold color. This blue Lapis bangle features a stunning blue Lapis gemstone which is not only beautiful but believed to improve sleep and cure insomnia! A fun piece that doesn’t need to be layered up to command attention, it can defiantly hold its own!

TREASURED TIME

What Mom doesn’t need more time? The Twenty-4 Collection by Patek Philippe features a slim design that is very elegant and practical. Designed for the refined, active woman to wear for all occasions, this piece is as much fine jewelry as it is fine Swiss Watchmaking.

Is Rose Gold Right For You?

Ask Amy Header - Wixon Jewelers

Do you have a question about diamonds, gemstones or jewelry? Submit your question here and you may be featured in Amy’s weekly column!

Question:

“My husband and I will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary this year and I would like to celebrate by redesigning my ring. Ten years ago I played it safe and selected a ring just like everyone else’s and now I am ready for something different! I’ve been seeing a lot of rose gold in fashion magazines, but I am unsure if this is the right move for me. What do you think?”

-Rebecca L. | Eagan, MN

Amy’s Answer:

Congratulations on your anniversary, Rebecca! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate ten years than with a new ring! Personally, I am head-over-heels in love with rose gold! It looks fantastic with diamonds, gorgeous with color gemstones and so elegant on a great timepiece.

Historically, this gold was dubbed “Russian Gold” after it originated in Russia during the 19th century. It became accepted all over the world in the 1920s and has recently witnessed an impressive comeback since its heyday during the retro period of the 30s and 40s.

Rose Gold Engagement Rings by A. Jaffe

I think that rose gold could be an incredible option for you! Here are five reasons to consider rose gold…

1. IT’S HERE TO STAY

Don’t worry about this look quickly becoming passé. For the foreseeable future, I predict a rosy outlook for this pleasantly pink precious metal.

2. PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS

The pink hue of rose gold works beautifully with all skin types, bringing out the blush tones of the skin. Rose gold adds warmth and marries well with color gemstones, especially the pink Spinel in this Wixon Custom pendant.

3. INCREDIBLE VERSATILITY

Rose gold is so versatile; you don’t have to worry about changing over your entire jewelry wardrobe to match a new rose gold ring. In fact, the subtle tones of rose are ideal for mixing and matching and pair so well with other platinum and yellow gold pieces you currently own.

4. PERFECT FOR PAVE

I love rose gold pave! The great thing is that it doesn’t have that “bling” effect that we see sometimes with platinum or yellow gold pave pieces.

5. STYLISH & TRENDY

Its understated elegance matches so nicely with the feminine styles and trends that we’re seeing today.
